The 20th International Saxophone Meeting in Nova Gorica will be closed with an attractive jazz concert putting the spotlight on the talented American saxophone player James Carter. He is coming to Slovenia as part of his Mediterranean tour and this will be his only performance here, and the first one since 2000 when he played at the Ljubljana Jazz Festival with his Electric Band. This time he will perform with his organ trio including organ player Gerard Gibbs on the Hammond B3 and Alex White on drums. The RTV Slovenia Big Band, the most prominent Slovenian jazz orchestra, will be joining him on stage on the occasion of its 70th anniversary, under the baton of Lojze Kranjčan. The members of the saxophone section will have a special act, with some of them playing their own compositions. Two French saxophone players, Guillaume Orti with his own jazz programme and Claude Delangle with unforgettable melodies of Janez Gregorc, Slovenian music icon, will also be performing with the Big Band.
A new song, commissioned by the Kulturni dom Nova Gorica in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the International Saxophone Meetings, will be played at the end of the concert. It was written by the exceptional Croatian composer and saxophone player Gordan Tudor and it will combine the musical ideas of two legendary masters of classical and jazz saxophone, Claude Delangle and James Carter, as well as the following Slovenian and foreign guests who are also acting as judges and organisers of the 8th International Saxophone Competition: Matjaž Drevenšek (SLO), Steven Mauk (USA), Guillaume Orti (F), Dejan Prešiček (SLO), Lev Pupis (SLO), Gordan Tudor (CRO), alongside with the saxophone section and the entire RTV Slovenia Big Band.
James Carter, is one of the most renowned saxophone players of his generation and is coming from the United States. He was born in Detroit in 1969 and has been playing the saxophone since he was eleven. He caught the attention of the audience at 23, when he published his first album "JC On the Set" in Japan and thus has opened a new path in jazz. Together with Lester Bowie he consolidated his position as master of all types of saxophones, in addition to the clarinet and the flute. He is leading many famous complexes, creating a variety of musical styles, ranging from funk to bepop and gypsy swing with a deep knowledge of the legends of American jazz. He directed the recording of a series of albums featuring jazz musicians of all generations and schools. Carter always finds a way into whatever musical situation he finds himself in. “You have to be totally comfortable wherever,” Carter says. “I think there’s tremendous beauty in cross-pollinations of music and influences.”
