MADE TO BREAK is improviser/composer (as well as great clarinetist and saxophonist) Ken Vandermark’s newest his most radical ensemble. An artist who approaches his music – between jazz and improvisation – combining experimental elements, his constant interest, with the music of Ethiopia alongside the New Music ideas of John Cage and Morton Feldman.
The result is a compositional framework that can be restructured for every performance and which deals with melody, sound, and rhythm in a completely unique way. This creative and almost random approach gives the project an almost unprecedented flexibility and immediacy. The instruments of the quartet (drums, electric bass, electronics, and reeds) have given Vandermark an extraordinary palette of sounds to explore with each composition, but it is the individual artistic greatness of the people involved in the ensemble that provides the project with such a dynamic and spontaneous energy.
