........................................................
This international symposium highlights the turbulent period between 1914 and 1918, when the civilian population also suffered terribly under military occupation. In music, people were able to find a brief distraction from the misery of everyday life during wartime. The sound of a march escorted soldiers onto battlefields, old folksongs and composed songs gave them comfort, cheering them in hours of rest. Off the frontline, under the auspices of nationally conscious associations and charitable organizations, benefit concerts were held, songbooks were printed, and promenade concerts by professional military orchestras were performed to boost morale with patriotic marches. New ‘wartime’ songs were composed offering hope and comfort.
Researchers from the fields of music, literature, cultural history and other human sciences will reveal music and culture on and off the frontline. They will discuss the responses to cultural propaganda, focusing on the role of creativity and interpretation in maintaining humanistic values.
