Every year, TENSO organizes workshops to encourage young conductors to take on choral music. In April 2017, a workshop for conductors from Central Europe was organized for the first time in Ljubljana, together with the Slovenian Philharmonic Choir. Two composers were selected to participate in the Nova Gorica workshop: David Veber from Slovenia and Jug Markovic from Serbia. They will be joined by Sofia Borges from Portugal and Maria Rostovtseva from Estonia. The composers have been asked to use texts from 1914-1918 in the compositions they bring to the workshops.
The workshop sessions are coached by internationally renowned musicians and experts with many years of experience. James Wood, conductor and percussionist, has worked as a conductor with many leading European chamber choirs with repertoires ranging from the 15th century to the present day. Dutch composer, musicologist and publicist Leo Samama is the chief artistic advisor of the TENSO Network Europe and one of its founding members. Fabio Nieder is a prominent composer and winner of numerous international awards (ISCM Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Gustav Mahler Prize). The demonstration ensemble of these workshops will be the world renowned Latvian Radio Choir, which represents a special opportunity for the young composers.
