The 23rd International meeting of saxophonists in Slovenia – SAXGO19 will conclude with a concert by one of the most admired alto saxophonists in jazz, as Kenny Garrett was defined by the New York Times. Kenny Garrett and his quintet, composed by Corcoran Holt on acoustic bass, Vernell Brown on acoustic piano, Samuel Laviso on drums, and Rudy Bird on percussion, will perform at the Kromberk Castle amphitheatre.
Saxophonist, bandleader, and composer Kenny Garrett is a most versatile player, equally at home playing classic blues and rhythm & blues as he is interpreting classic jazz compositions and even fusion. He has released a number of critically acclaimed albums and, prior to the birth of his recording career, paid his dues in the jazz clubs in and around his native Detroit. Garrett's music career, besides concert performances, is marked by his musical composition and numerous recorded albums, such as, Introducing Kenny Garrett, Prisoner of Love, African Exchange Student, Black Hope, Trilogy, Pursuance: The Music of John Coltrane, Songbook, Simply Said, Happy People, Standard of Language, Sketches of MD, Seeds from the Underground, World Away and the last album Do Your Dance! that will be presented in Nova Gorica.
During the 30-year career of saxophonist, Kenny Garrett (Detroit, 1960) became the most outstanding alto saxophonist of his generation. His distinguished credits extend from starting with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, led by Mercer Ellington, to Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Donald Byrd, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, and Miles Davis, with whom he ascended to international stardom. He was always able to present lively, yet melodic and truly unique sound of the altar saxophone, within a wide variety of its musical expressions. In addition, he performed with contemporary music stars such as Marcus Miller, Sting, Meshell Ndegeocello, Q-Tip and Cameo, as well. In the last two decades, he has also developed into an excellent composer in addition to the role of the bandleader. He is a five-time Grammy Award nominee and 2010 Grammy Award winner. Five Peace Band with the album Live CD 2010 won as the Best Jazz Instrumental Album. In 2011, he also received an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music.

Kenny Garrett about his music:
'Records and concerts are about me taking people on the ride I want to take them on. It can be pretty ballads, some intensity, and then we can party! When they leave, I hope they feel like we took them on a journey. And when they come back to see us or put that CD in the player years later, I hope people have a deeper perspective on the music than the first time.' Kenny Garrett
