   Artistic director:

   Matjaž Drevenšek (SI) 

Matjaz-Drevensekis a resident professor of saxophone and Vice Dean at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana, a soloist, chamber performer, member of the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet, SOS Saxophone Orchestra and of other ensembles with which he performs throughout Europe, Asia, Canada, South America and the USA. As a soloist, he plays with leading symphony orchestras and concert bands at home and abroad (Croatia, France, Hong Kong, USA). He took part, as a jury member, in Slovenian and international competitions for young musicians (Austria, France, Croatia, Italy, Latvia, Germany, Poland, Serbia). He premiered over 50 pieces by domestic and foreign composers, and he has taken part in 19 discography projects. He was formally president of the Saksofonija Music Society, which during the summer of 2006 hosted the 14th World Saxophone Congress. He also served as president of the Jeunesses Musicales Slovenia. Since 2004 he is the artistic director of the International Saxophone Meetings and International Saxophone Competition in Nova Gorica.

   Professors:

   Jean-Denis Michat (FR)

JD MICHAT  graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with a degree in saxophone as well as in composition, analysis, music history and new music technology. At the age of 25, he was appointed saxophone professor at the Conservatoire National de Région in Lyon, and later he was promoted to assistant-professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (CNSMDP). He teaches at masterclasses in France and abroad to saxophone students as well as to tutors, he also teaches at saxophone summer schools in Gap (France). He is also a jury member at international competitions. As a concert performer, Jean-Denis Michat is recognized for the high quality of his performances of classical pieces, and is known for devoting careful attention to transcriptions of the classical literature. As a leading artist he collaborates, assists and takes part in developing and promoting the manufacturing of the Yanagisawa Saxophone. He has not only premiered the pieces by renowned composers, such as Stockhausen, Mantovani, Ton That Tiêt, Escaich, Levy, Merah and others to consistent acclaim, but he is also becoming well-known as a composer.

      Saša Nestorović (HR) 

sasa nestorovicgraduated with a degree in saxophone from the University of Zagreb’s Academy of Music in the class of Josipa Nochte. From 1991 to 1998, he taught classical saxophone at the Pavel Markovec School of Music as well as jazz saxophone and the principles of jazz improvisation at the Secondary School of Music and Ballet in Ljubljana. He has been a regular saxophonist and clarinettist of the Croatian Radio Television Big Band since 1998 and he also received 13 “Status” awards conferred by the Croatian Musicians Union to the most outstanding Croatian musicians. For the last seven years, he has been an Assistant Professor at the Academy of Music in Zagreb, where he teaches chamber music, the principles of jazz improvisation and leads a jazz band. He is the co-founder of the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet with which he performed at numerous concerts and held workshops across the US, Europe and Asia. He performs regularly as a conductor and solo artist of the Croatian Radio Television Big Band, as member of the Acezantez ensemble and several smaller chamber and jazz orchestras. www.zagrebsax4.net

   Guillaume Orti (FR),

Guillaume Orti French jazz saxophonist, started playing the saxophone at the age of eleven. Since then he has always been interested in improvisation as well as in any written music. He studied both jazz and classical music at the Regional Conservatory of Avignon and attended to many different instrumental workshops and seminar. Settled in Paris in 1989, he co-founded the band Kartet, then the collectives of musicians Hask and Mercoledi & Co. These three ensembles were to become leading voices in the field of improvised music. Meeting musicians throughout Europe, Africa and India led him to develop long term collaborations with many other bands. For the years 2012 and 2013, he was artictic director of the European Saxophone Ensemble: an ensemble of 12 young saxophonists from twelve different countries of the European Union gathered for an original repertoire created by 5 European composers.

   Lev Pupis (SI), 

Lev Pupisone of the best Slovenian classical saxophone players, studied in Vienna, Paris and Ljubljana, where he works as a teacher at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet. His professors were Oto Vrhovnik, Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Vincent David and Matjaž Drevenšek, although he also studied with an array of other world-renowned saxophonists. As a solo artist, he cooperates with famed chamber and symphonic orchestras. He is the founder of the 4saxess saxophone quartet, which he led on tours across Europe and the US, as well as a member and concertmaster of the SOS saxophone orchestra that brings together prominent Slovenian and Croatian saxophonists. Contemporary Slovenian and foreign authors wrote over 30 music pieces for him and the orchestras he actively cooperates with. Lev Pupis teaches quite frequently at foreign music academies and several summer schools, while also acting as judge at music competitions in Slovenia and abroad. In 2010, he became Assistant Professor at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet and is an endorser of the RICO and SEQUOIA brands.

   Boštjan Simon (SI) 

Bostjan SImon graduated in Philosophy from the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana with prof. Lev Kreft with a thesis on John Cage and the Twilight of the Arts. Having completed his saxophone studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music, he devoted his time to improvisation and performances all over Europe. Currently, he teaches saxophone at the Nova Gorica School of Music and is a founding member of Big Band Nova, Trus!, There Be Monsters, Vanilla Riot and Velkro. He is interested in a range of approaches to improvising on the saxophone, exploring sound using alternative techniques, and using different effects and live sampling. His compositions include elements of various genres, as well as mixed rhythms and techniques of Indian polyrhythms. His sax solos and compositions have been included in more than 14 editions, published by several record companies.

 

  Piano accompanist:

   Zoltan Peter (SI)

Peter Zoltanbegan his academic studies in the class of Arbo Valdma at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad and completed his piano studies at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana. As a soloist, chamber musician and piano accompanist for all generations of top musicians, he has performed across Slovenia and abroad. As one of the finest chamber and piano accompanists in the region, he has mastered an extensive repertoire and has taken part in countless domestic and international masterclasses and competitions. Apart from teaching and performing, he also gives seminars for piano students, teachers and piano accompanists. 

Programme:

  • masterclasses with selected professors in the morning,
  • rehearsals with an orchestra in the afternoon,
  • work with piano accompanist,
  • performing with the accompanying orchestra at the final concert of the 19th International Saxophone Meeting,
  • attending concerts of the 19th International Saxophone Meeting,

General Information:

Participants may register for up to five masterclasses and take part in either a jazz or a classical sax orchestra. The distribution of lessons is entirely at the discretion of the art director. The timetable will be established according to the number of participants and will be available directly before the beginning of the masterclasses.

The lessons will take place at the Nova Gorica School of Music, Cankarjeva ulica 8. Practice rooms will be available for participants.

THE MASTERCLASSES ARE OPEN TO PARTICIPANTS OF ALL LEVELS OF COMPETENCE, WITH NO AGE LIMITATIONS.

Fee for masterclasses with all professors: €250
Fee for each masterclass:  €70

The number of participants is limited. Places will be allocated according to the date of receipt of the completed registration form. The deadline for application is Wednesday, 3 June 2015 (date of postmark). In the case of participant cancellation the organizer will retain 20% of the participation fee to cover administrative expenses.
