SUMMER SCHOOL

Professors of classical saxophone:
Matjaž Drevenšek (SI) is a resident professor of saxophone and Vice Dean at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana, a soloist, chamber performer, member of the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet, SOS Saxophone Orchestra and of other ensembles with which he performs throughout Europe, Asia, Canada, South America and the USA. As a soloist, he plays with leading symphony orchestras and concert bands at home and abroad (Croatia, France, Hong Kong, USA). He took part, as a jury member, in Slovenian and international competitions for young musicians (Austria, France, Croatia, Italy, Latvia, Germany, Poland, Serbia). He premiered over 50 pieces by domestic and foreign composers, and he has taken part in 20 discography projects. He was formally president of the Saksofonija Music Society, which during the summer of 2006 hosted the 14th World Saxophone Congress. He also served as president of the Jeunesses Musicales Slovenia. Since 2004 he is the artistic director of the International Saxophone Meetings and International Saxophone Competition in Nova Gorica.

Jan Gričar (SI) Jan Gričar belongs to the young and prosperous Slovenian saxophone generation. He graduated with the highest grade ‘summa cum laude’ from Academy of music in Ljubljana in the classes of professors Matjaž Drevenšek and Miha Rogina. Currently he is finishing his master studies at the Paris Conservatory (CNSM de Paris) in the class of professor Claude Delangle, at the same time he is also studying chamber music in the class of professor Laszlo Hadady as a member of the Niobé saxophone quartet. He regularly performs all over Slovenia and Europe. As a soloist he performed with the Vienna Symphonic orchestra, Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, RTV Slovenia Symphonic Orchestra, Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra. In his career he has also collaborated with the Ensemble Intercontemporain and renowned conducters as En Shao, Matthias Pintscher, Anton Nanut, Marko Letonja. He is a first prize winner of many national and international competitions - TEMSIG, Marco Fiorindo 2011, SVIREL 2014, International saxophone competition Nova Gorica 2016. He was presented with the Lucijan Marija Škerjanc award by Conservatory of Music and Ballet Ljubljana and two significant awards given by University of Ljubljana, the Prešeren award and the Special award for best academic achievements. Jan is also a scholarship holder of the Ministry of culture Slovenia.

Piano Accompanist:
Sae LEE (Japan) After studying at the University of Music Toho-Gakuen she continued her studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Professors Michel BEROFF and Eric LE SAGE. In June 2007 and 2008 she graduated with the highest marks of Piano and Chamber Music. She was the prize winner at the International Competition of “Citta di Padova” and at the International Piano Competition of ″Albert Roussel″. In 2004 she started to play with a saxophone player Miha Rogina as Duo Karypso. Duo Kalypso is a prize winner of International competition for music of ensembles ″FNAPEC″. They have also won the 1st prize at the International chamber music competition of “Carlo Soliva″ . She appeared on radio and TV programs in Japan and also in Europe. She is regularly invited to the music festivals and gives recitals and chamber music concerts in Europe and Japan.
Programme:
- 4 individual lessons with selected professors (only classical saxophone, only jazz saxophone or both),
- rehearsals with chamber groups and an orchestra,
- preparation and study of compositions with the piano accompanist,
- attending concerts of the 21st International Saxophone Meeting,
- creative workshop with Milko Lazar.
Professors of jazz:
Chris Speed (ZDA) Chris Speed is one of the most influential and renowned tenor saxophonists and clarinetists in Brooklyn. He is the founder of an array of music bands, such as: Endangered Blood, Human Feel, yeah NO, Trio Iffy, Pachora, and an associate member of famous groups, such as the Claudia Quintet and Alas No Axis. His style is an extremely rich blend of musical elements and associations, ranging from jazz to rock and Balkan signatures and melodies. The list of his collaborations includes Jim Black, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andrew D'Angelo, Skulli Sverrisson, Dave King, Mary Halvorson, Craig Taborn, Uri Caine, Dave Douglas and John Zorn. Speed was named the rising star clarinetist in Downbeat magazine for 2004, 2005 and 2006. In April 2006, he launched Skirl Records, an eclectic label dedicated to Brooklyn-based creative music.

Boštjan Simon (SI) graduated in Philosophy from the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana with prof. Lev Kreft with a thesis on John Cage and the Twilight of the Arts. Having completed his saxophone studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music, he devoted his time to improvisation and performances all over Europe. Currently, he teaches saxophone at the Nova Gorica School of Music and is a founding member of Big Band Nova, Trus!, There Be Monsters, Vanilla Riot and Velkro. He is interested in a range of approaches to improvising on the saxophone, exploring sound using alternative techniques, and using different effects and live sampling. His compositions include elements of various genres, as well as mixed rhythms and techniques of Indian polyrhythms. His sax solos and compositions have been included in more than 14 editions, published by several record companies.

SPECIAL OFFER Composer, pianist and saxophonist Milko Lazar will hold a two-day workshop during the 2017 International Saxophone Meeting in Nova Gorica. The main purpose of the workshop is to explore the uncharted musical territories between improvisation and composition, between modern jazz and contemporary classical music, between articulation and free-flow jazz expression, in order to re-compose them into a new entity. |
General Information:
The timetable will be established according to the number of participants and will be available directly before the beginning of the masterclasses. The lessons will take place at the Nova Gorica School of Music, Cankarjeva ulica 8. Practice rooms will be available for participants.
The distribution of lessons is entirely at the discretion of the art directors.
THE SUMMER SCHOOL IS OPEN TO PARTICIPANTS OF ALL LEVELS OF COMPETENCE, WITH NO AGE LIMITATIONS.
Fee for summer school: €250
Fee for creative workshop: €50
Passive participation: €30
For the participants of the summer school the music workshop is free of charge.
The number of participants is limited. Places will be allocated according to the date of receipt of the completed registration form. The deadline for application is Wednesday, 14 June 2017 (date of postmark). In the case of participant cancellation the organizer will retain 20% of the participation fee to cover administrative expenses.
