The Nova Gorica Cultural Centre is a public entity founded in 1980. Over the last four decades, our concert house has hosted many exciting and important concerts and events turning Nova Gorica into a hotspot for music and culture both at the national and international level. Over time, the concerts we organize and offer have become well-positioned in the demanding music world, attracting renowned musicians from all around the world. We boast an enviable list of artists who have performed on our stage, including top Slovenian and international soloist and chamber ensembles, a series of national philharmonic and symphonic orchestras. Our concert programmes have included most of the classical masterpieces while paying particular attention to the Slovenian artists.
In 2000, the Municipal Art Gallery of Nova Gorica, which represents the central exhibition centre for modern visual arts in the Goriška Region, came under the auspices of the Cultural Centre. The Gallery with a well-designed exhibition concept has managed to consolidate its valuable position in the Slovenian territory. Moreover, Pixxelpoint - the international festival of contemporary art practices makes it even more recognizable and visible abroad as well.
Since 2008, the Cultural Centre has also been home to cinema with assorted screenings of artists' films and children and youth programme, fulfilling the tasks and objectives of a public service operating in the field of cinematography.
Cross-border cooperation represents one of our strategic goals and such projects receive a great deal of attention. Indeed, we are well aware of the fact that our establishment contributes significantly to the cultural scene in the city and its wider area. We therefore frequently highlight the strategic position of Nova Gorica and the Cultural Centre which acts as a promotor of Slovenian art in Italy and engages in intercultural dialogue with the neighbouring Gorizia. In 2019, we became members of a cross-border project #teatrinrete, a common project intended for the promotion of music and theatre seasons. Our partners, theatres from Cormons, Gradisca d’Isonzo, Gorizia and Monfalcone, as well as the Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica, have thus recognized our long-standing cross-border work and efforts to form partner networks across the border. This kind of cooperation and integration actually reinforces our cross-border ties and encourages the flow of visitors from both countries.
On top of all that, the Cultural Centre with the cooperation of the association Area 57/15 has established the KiT Cultural Information Touchpoint. Since 2016, it has been located in the building of the Nova Gorica railway station, attracting annually almost 9,000 visitors from more than 50 countries. It provides cultural and tourist information, but also guided tours of Gorizia and Nova Gorica in the Slovenian and Italian language. We are proud and pleased that the Municipality of Gorizia, together with the City Municipality of Nova Gorica, co-finances the common information touchpoint and thus enables its operation and achievement of its objectives.
The founder of our Cultural Centre is the City Municipality of Nova Gorica. The decree as of 22 April 2004 establishing the public institute “Kulturni dom Nova Gorica” replaced the previous Statute and set and defined its workflow, activities and mission. The Nova Gorica Cultural Centre has a regional focus. It provides various artistic, cultural and educational programmes covering music, fine arts and cinema for the Nova Gorica City Municipality, neighbouring municipalities and beyond. Indeed, its activities comprise the entire Goriška statistical region, as well as the provinces of Trieste and Gorizia. We are well aware of our role and position as one of the central cultural and artistic institutions in the region as well as the wider Primorska region. This is why we draw particular attention to the variety and quality of individual art projects. In 2019, we organized 624 events that took place at the Cultural Centre and at the City Gallery, but also across many other locations that are associated with our exhibitions and festivals. These music, fine art and film events have attracted 69,430 visitors.
Our cultural and artistic institution standing at a delicate crossroads of different nations and cultures has, without a shadow of doubt, an important mission to encourage the development of different art forms and creativity, enriching the cultural and spiritual life not only in the city but also in its wider area. Nurturing and fostering cultural and artistic values still remain at the core of our mission and we place a great deal of emphasis on creative challenges and quality art programmes. We will continue to improve this precious mission as we realize it brings significant added value to our environment.
