The Quartet is known for the exquisitely Viennese sound of the strings, which also the core genre of their artistic endeavours. The ensemble started playing in 1980 at masterclasses in Vienna and Cincinnati with the LaSalle quartet, and between 1983 and 1985 they have won competitions in Cambridge, Evian and Yellow Springs. By now they have performed in all the important festivals of chamber music in Europe, America and Asia. They mostly play and record pieces by great Viennese composers. They have received a series of prestigious awards for their recordings of works by Karl Weigl and Alexander Zemlinsky, and have published the complete works of contemporary Viennese composer Gottfried von Einem. The punctilious execution and a recognisable sound pattern made them stand out and established their place on the international concert scene. In 2003, the Artis String Quartet pioneered a new way of playing that turned out a huge success: all the musicians, except for the cellist, are standing. They are also known for using instruments of considerable historical value.
