Renaissance instrumentalist often performed music which is today usually associated with vocal performances. A cembalist or an organist played a polyphonic motet, a madrigal or a chanson, while a flutist or gambist "accompanied" him with an ornamented version of the selected melodic line. The tradition of improvised ornaments known in Italian as diminutions or “passaggi” is documented in many textbooks which were predominantly published in Venice between 1535 and 1626.

Flutist Anne Freitag has won several important European early music competitions. She engages in historical improvisation and teaches at the University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig. The musica cubicularis ensemble was established in 2004 and has since performed for the Slovenian audience at more than 40 carefully researched theme concerts, playing music from the 16th to the early 20th century on appropriate period instruments. The ensemble regularly includes in its concerts less familiar and unpublished works, even arias from the archives of the Counts of Attems from Slovenska Bistrica, dialogues from the archives of the Koper Cathedral, sacred music from the Franciscan monastery in Novo mesto and concerts from the Ptuj collection.
