Makalonca is a newly established ensemble founded by Janez Jocif in his desire to explore historical performance practice in the Slovenian folk heritage. Early codifications of Slovenian folk music dating back to the first half of the 19th century represent the most important source for their interpretations. Among these, musical fragments from the Middle Ages associated with the modal tradition can be found. They have been mainly preserved in Slovenian peripheral regions, like Prekmurje, Bela Krajina, Rezija, Koroška and Istria. On the other hand, the ensemble draws inspiration from experiences gained in the so-called early music, to which the members are actively committed. Their aim is to resurrect forgotten medieval sounds from the Slovenian territory by using their knowledge of preserved and reconstructed performance practices and copies of period instruments depicted in Slovenian medieval frescoes.
